What does it mean to be a qualified Interior Designer?

“Interior design is about more than aesthetics. It's about finding creative design solutions for interior environments while supporting the health, safety, and the well-being of the people who use those spaces.”

-ARIDO

The term “interior designer” is often mistakenly used interchangeably with the term “interior decorator”, when in fact these are two very different professions.

While an interior decorator has a keen eye for furnishing spaces, and often assists with kitchen and bath design, their focus is mainly on aesthetics. Interior decorators don’t require any formal training or credentials to do their work.

Interior designers work alongside architects and contractors to assist with spatial planning, and to improve not only the appearance, but also the function of a space. In Ontario, interior designers require an education from a recognized post-secondary institution, must complete supervised work experience, and are required to write a series of regulated exams which test knowledge of building codes, accessibility, sustainability and much more.
